Today the world is celebrating one of its greenest holidays, Earth Day. People all around the globe will take time to appreciate and respect our environment and, most importantly, encourage social awareness. Volunteer projects will abound, homes and businesses will go dark and hundreds of thousands of people will fill the National Mall in Washington, DC to tip their hats to planet Earth and vow to make their lives a little greener.
As food is (usually) from the earth, it should come as no surprise that we here at GrubHub.com would like to take a minute to toast a few organic restaurants across the United States. These eateries – in Boston, New York, Chicago and San Francisco – go the extra mile to ensure their food is organic, sustainable and, in many cases, locally produced. What better way to celebrate Earth than eating what it naturally gives us?
Organic One Café
In Chicago’s Lincoln Park neighborhood, a restaurant called Organic One Café is serving up on-the-go food in a healthy form. With organic breads, cheeses, produce and meats (antibiotic and hormone-free from animals fed on gluten and casein-free vegetarian grain), Organic One can ensure a green meal. The menu features sandwiches, salads, paninis, frappes and even a smoothie of the day made with seasonal and locally-grown organic fruit.

GustOrganics, an eatery in New York’s Greenwich Village, is “changing the world one meal at a time” with its organic Latin-inspired fare. Boasting a long list of green “firsts” (like the first and only USDA certified organic bar on the planet), this restaurant offers nutritious, natural and sustainable food from local organic farms while conserving energy and preserving resources. Find grilled pizzas, turkey meatballs, pastas, empanadas, piadinas and a green-friendly bar mixing organic cocktails like mojitos, martinis and margaritas. Gluten-free, vegan and vegetarian dishes are plentiful here.
In celebration of Earth Day, GustOrganics will offer a $29 pre-fixed dinner from 5-11 p.m. April 22. The menu will include organic delights like arugula salad, baked mozzarella cheese, grass-fed filet mignon and free range chicken. Also, for every cocktail sold at GustOrganics on Earth Day, Tru Vodka will plant one tree.

If you’re in San Francisco, pay a visit to Soup Freaks. This spot is crazy about soup, utilizing sustainably-farmed organic vegetables, Meyer’s 100 percent natural home-grown Angus beef and Rosie chicken. Soup choices include chili (with a touch of Sharffenberger chocolate!), roasted tomato basil, split pea, matzo, beluga lentil and shitake. Soup Freaks also dishes up sandwiches, specialty salads, organic cookies and a soda bar (all natural with no chemical preservatives or colorings). Breakfast is available, too, with steel-cut oatmeal, organic egg sandwiches and granola.

Stone Hearth Pizza
At Stone Hearth Pizza in Boston, diners can find an ever-changing menu comprised of organic, locally-produced and sustainable ingredients. With the goal of supporting family farming and protecting natural resources, the pizzeria works with local suppliers (including more than 30 local farms in New England) like Great Hill Dairy in Marion, Mass., to provide its blue cheese, Verril Farm in Concord, Mass., to provide its lettuce and herbs, and Angelato in Belmont, Mass., to provide fresh gelato each day.
Stone Hearth makes its Neapolitan style, oven-fired pizzas with 100 percent organic flour and tops the pies with fresh ingredients like all beef nitrate-free pepperoni, goat cheese, prosciutto, summer squash, banana peppers and Yukon gold potatoes. It also goes the extra length to use corn starch-based containers and cups for carry-out orders. The restaurant serves filtered water instead of bottles and uses a minimum of 30 percent recycled paper.
