I’m excited to announce that GrubHub has secured a Series C round of funding led by Benchmark Capital, with Origin Ventures, Leo Capital and Amicus Capital participating. As you might imagine, it’s been a good week. We are very excited about having Benchmark as our new partner because of their experience working with other Internet consumer brands such as OpenTable, Yelp and Zillow. I’ll try to relate some of the different parts of the GrubHub community that this investment touches.
Over the last 10 months, we’ve launched in a handful of new markets, added item search, redesigned the website, and put more focus on mobile with a new iPhone app and our very first Android app. All of these changes are designed to make it easier than ever for folks to get what they’re craving wherever they are.
What’s on deck
This new round of funding means our Twitter peeps will finally get their wish – we’ll be adding a pile of cities (still a secret as to which ones….stay tuned). And for those our loyal diners in our current cities, we’ll continue bringing more restaurants to the website and mobile apps. Oh, and speaking of mobile apps, we’ll keep improving our already awesome iPhone and Android apps.
Around the office I was asked, “How are things going to change here with this new investment.” Personally, my days have shifted over the last three weeks from investment to hiring (check out our careers page for the most recent job openings). In particular, I’m focused on making sure that our culture grows in the right direction. We’ll continue building great products with the same service oriented outlook and bring those products to both our restaurants and users.
I’m also very excited about what this means for our restaurants. The vast majority of them are independent owners. Increasing their business is our mission. In fact, just last week we got flowers from a restaurant owner who thanked us for keeping him in business through the tough economy. That is enormously satisfying.
Into the future
As we work on taking things to the next level, we’re going to make sure to keep our feet firmly planted on the ground. We know that it has taken a lot of hard work to get to where we are, and we know it’s going to take a lot more to get to where we know we can go. But for now, it’s a good time to pause for a minute to offer a big thank you to the community of people that have made this journey possible so far. We’re not done yet, and we look forward to feeding more hungry people and keeping our restaurants cookin’!
